Reply to this post with some thoughts on what you read this week. Are you still liking your book? If you could change something about it, what would you change? What is lacking? Does this book seem similar to other books you've read before? How about other things you've watched before? After all, stories are stories regardless of the medium in which they are presented.
Be sure to come back to these SSR posts (this week and last) and comment on what others are reading.
This week I am reading "King's Cage" by Victoria Aveyard. I read this series awhile back, so I decided to finish off what I started. I stopped halfway (last year) because I was interested in other books. Anyways, this book doesn't have the "pizzazz" like the ones before it. I feel annoyed by the main character's choices; it seems to be all about her love life rather than the war between the people inside the kingdom. I have noticed I tend to read books that are fictional - kingdoms, magic, love triangles, and evil turns. As of right now, I am unhappy with my book and think I might stop reading it. If I could change the book, I would focus more on the less important characters that are actually fighting for the plot of the book. There is too much complaining about romance, I need action.
ReplyDeleteThis week, I'm continuing to read "The Wicked Will Rise" by Danielle Paige. So far, the story line is still good and I've become more intrigued by what the characters are doing in a time of chaos. As of right now, if I could change the book, I would change the main character's backstory. It doesn't really fit with her character design in my opinion. Her personality tells a completely different story from her backstory, which kind of makes it confusing for me. I think what's lacking in the story is just a few supporting details for each character's cause of turmoil and reason to why they did what they did. The book is similar to what I've read and watched in the past. In my opinion, it is kind of similar to the book "The Giver" by Lois Lowry. The reason I see a similarity between these two books is because the thing that is supposed to be good in their world, ends up becoming bad and leads to chaos and destruction. In both books, the society's are being ruled by leaders who believe that what they say is right, even though it keeps people from what's true.
ReplyDeleteI find it very ironic that the characters are going through a chaotic time. Just like we are going through unprecedented times. Except nothing good came from this virus, well maybe the fact that people are more clean and actually cover their mouths when they sneeze now. Hopefully we do not end up in total destruction :0. Its like the media in our case what you are ending with, we dont know what to believe on this virus anymore because their is so much misinformation.
DeleteThis week im still reading "The Selection" it did start off quite slow but the plot of the story has gotten interesting. For me a book has to start off strong and continue that way or ill lose interest that is one thing I would change about the book. Since ive had a lot of time I gave the book a chance and continued to read it. The plot of "The selection" does seem similar to something ive watched before because like I had mentioned in last weeks blog the plot is of someone trying to take control of their own life and make their own path.
ReplyDeleteI feel that I am the exact same way, I get bored easily if the book is not interesting... It is good that we are reading of books of characters trying to take control of their own lives, Sybil in my book is going to a Psychoanalysts who is a psychologist that watches her in hopes of trying to take control of her own life, and just be one whole person again. Instead of a person with 16 different split personalities.
DeleteThis week I am continuing to read "Sybil" by Flora Rheta Schrieber. I am still enjoying my book. However, if I could change something I would make it more clear on who is speaking, as there are more than 16 different personalities that Sybil has it gets confusing on who is speaking. This book is lacking a good explanation for characters. Sybil is unlike any other book as it tells of one single character with sixteen different personalities, you really get to imagine the lives of people with multiple personalities. Usually other books or movies like to revolve around one person, which has one personality that is static, but not this novel. It is very dynamic.
ReplyDeleteThis week I am continuing to read “Moloka’I by Alan Brennert. I still enjoy and like reading this book. However, the only complaint that I have about this book is the font size because it’s so small compared to all the other font size of the books that I have read. That would be the only change I would do in this book. So far this book is not lacking anything. The story plot is interesting and engaging. This book isn’t similar to the books that I have read before. Therefore I am trying something new.
ReplyDeleteThis week I am still reading “Becoming” by Michelle Obama. I am still enjoying this book. Something I would change about the book is she talks about her piano lessons too much, I would shorten that a little. It seems like she repeats herself too much that she had to go down stairs to go get piano lessons. Other than that I wouldn’t change anything about the book because it's about her becoming who she is today. I read something like this when I was in elementary school. It was a book about Jackie Robinson. I don’t really watch tv so I don’t think I’ve watched something like the book. -Arianna Alcala
ReplyDeleteThis week I am still reading "David and Goliath" by Malcolm Gladwell. I still enjoy this book, and I don't really think it could disappoint me. This book is more so on the nature of how one thinks and behaves. The ways to utilize certain disadvantages and turn them into something great. This book is more to help alter human behavior and help heads of businesses apply these theories into success stories. This is really my first time reading this type of book, and it certainly won't be my last. However, because my lack of knowledge of these types of books I can't really say that there is something I would like to change. I just don't know yet what makes those types of books good, and what makes them bad. To be honest the only thing I have watched on something involving how the mind works would be a show that happened to be on once that was how magic can trick the mind, and how it works. Other than that I am pretty clueless on the matter. Still I am excited to read books like this, so that one day I'll know a good one from a bad one.
ReplyDeleteThis week I am reading "The 5th Wave" by Rick Yancey. I am still enjoying this book, and I am going to finish reading it. If I could change one thing in the book it would have to be the way the main character, Cassie, thinks and acts. She knows it is a bad idea to investigate bad situations but instead of going with her gut she decides to still investigate those situations. Which makes me believe she could get seriously hurt later on in the book. The only thing that seems to be lacking right now are just other characters, she mentions other characters like her dad before the aliens landed on earth but she has yet to mention seeing anyone else. This book really does not seem similar to other books I have read, this book is fiction and I feel the other books I read are non-fiction that don't include any aliens taking over Earth. I think this book does relate to movies I have seen where there are aliens taking over Earth and trying to kill humans. As of right now the book has my attention and I hope I don't get bored of it.
ReplyDeleteThis week I finished reading "The Glass Castle" by Jeannette Walls. Overall, I really enjoyed the book and would definitely recommend it to anyone. A few years ago, I remember watching the movie which is what drew me to this book. I like this book because it gives you perspective. "The Glass Castle" is a true story in the perspective of Jeanette Walls. Jeanette grows up in a pretty unstable family that moves around a lot and struggles with poverty. Her parents are very hands off, creative people when it comes to parenting. They have a mindset that kids shouldn't be protected rather they'll figure it out on their own. Jeanette takes the reader through her life as she begins to discover what she personally wants and desires for her life, despite how her parents raised her. I really enjoy learning about other peoples' lives and what they went through to get to where they are now. As I said earlier, this books gave me a lot of perspective to my own life. In some ways, this books is similar to books I've read before before because it's a growing up novel that describes struggles she faced. After finished this book, I don't think there was anything that I would change. However, I am curious what Jeanette Wall's life looks like now.
ReplyDeleteThis week I started rereading the Harry Potter series. As of today I started book 4 of the series, "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" by J.K Rowling. This series is one of my all time favorites. I recommend it to people who love reading about adventure and magic. I also recommend this series if you wanted to start reading just for fun, and not just because you have to. The Harry Potter series is what made me, personally, enjoy reading. The story follows a boy, Harry Potter, who suddenly finds out he is a wizard. The reader is able to follow along with Harry's life as he goes on many adventures in order to defeat Lord Voldemort who has been after Harry since he was a child. It's an amazing story and probably my favorite series I have read so far.
ReplyDeleteI am still in the process of reading "Flowers in the Attic," by V.C. Andrews. I am finding this book very enjoyable and interesting. If I could change anything about the book, it would be that I wish that it would change perspectives. As of right now, the second eldest child Cathy is telling the story, but I would like to also hear from the oldest child, Chris. I feel that the changes that are happening in the story would also be interesting to hear from the boys side. This is not very similar to anything else I have watched. This does remind me of the "Diary of Anne Frank," based on how intense it is and, how they cannot leave the attic.
