Reply to this post with your current thoughts on your SSR book after reading today/this week:
What book are you reading? Why did you choose this book? What do you think of the book so far? Can you see any connections between it and what is happening in our world today? Give the class some thoughts and ideas from your brain!
Right now I am currently reading "The Selection" by Kiera Cass. I chose this book because a friend of mine said it was an interesting and good book so I thought why not give it a try. So far I actually am enjoying the book:). One connection I do see from the book is that in the world today some people have their whole life already set up for them but sometimes they want to break away from it and have control over their life.
ReplyDeleteAt an unorecedented time like this, we can all relate to having felt lost control of our own lives. As we were striped of our school, friemds, shopping malls, restraunts, etc... it just feels like somethings are missing. It forces us to just break away for a second and reflect to take control of our own lives, as people are actually taking care and cleaning their houses if they are not working, or excercising.
DeleteThe book that I am currently reading is called Educated and it is a memoir of the author's life. The reason why I am reading this book is that my sister recommended this book to me, and while reading the book it has opened my mind about the importance of proper education. The book talks about the author's struggles growing up since her father kept her away from civilization since he felt as though they are all devil worshippers. He felt that to remain a true Christian they must live by the bible and to not meddle with things such as modern medicine and proper education provided by the federal government. The father did not want to enroll his children in public school since he felt as though the government would try to brainwash his kids to committing devilish acts.
ReplyDeleteAlthough I am not quite finished with the book, I feel such a tremendous amount of anger on how the father was raising his family. There were times where the family members were severely injured, but instead of taking them to the hospital, they were treated with oils and herbs from home. Also, the author was severely abused at times from her older brother while the mother was present, and instead of doing anything, the mother looked the other way. I don't think I have ever read a book that has led me to feel such anger towards the way a person was treated. The book highlights the importance of education since it shows that education is an important aspect of how you view the world.
After reading Sybil throughout the week, and today I can definitely say this is a ver interesting book and should not be underestimated as it is a #1 Best seller- with over 6 million copies worldwide. I originally found out about this book in my AP Psych class when Mr. Bybee was giving a power point on the topic of Psychological Disorders. There was a book he mentioned by the name of Sybil which caught my eye, and am glad I chose to read it.
ReplyDeleteSybil is the book that I'm currently reading and is a definite page turner by the author Flora Rheta Schreiber. This book had originaally caught my eye by just reading the cover of it. Which says " The Classic True Story of a Woman Possessed by Sixteen Personalities". WHich I know they say not to judge a book by its cover, but I mean who could ignore something like this? It's just so eye catching. Right now as I'm reading this book I currently know of only two different personalities of the major character, Sybil and Peggy. Peggy is mentioned throughout the fourth chapter. Peggy was unself-concious in a little-girl way, not easily embarrased. Instead, she git mad. Instead of being like Sybil, more mature and understanding, she gave much rage and feared most people. Sybil is the more mature adult, lets Peggy take over her life at the most unexpectant times. Peggy and Sybil are existing in the same body, although had sifferent memories, different moods, and different experiences. They show themselves in different ways. Their diction, voices, and vocabularies were very different. Sybil in this book sees a Psychoanalyst who views her behavior and then interprets her ways of being in the hopes of treating her to be just one whole person again. Dr. Willbur is the name of the Psychoanalyst who was just about to tell Sybil about Peggy, who doesn't know that Peggy is the other side of her dual personality. Sybil doesn't know about Peggy because out of nowhere, Peggy just takes over Sybil's body and when Penny is no longer present, Sybil comes back, and is unaware of anything that happened while Penny took over her. Dr. Wilbur was just about to diagnose Sybil with dual personality, until she met Victoria Antoinette Scharleau. The third of the other sixteen personalities I have yet to read about!
Sybil also makes a connetion to modern times as there are so many people being Diagnosed with Disorders, like Personality Disorder, Psychological Disorder, etc. This book just gives an actual true story of a girl being treated by a doctor from her long, ultimately triumphant journey back to "wholeness".
ReplyDeleteThe book that I am currently reading is Moloka`I by Alan Brennert. I chose this book because my government teacher was handing out free books to the students. what I think so far about this book is that it opens more doors to a new genres that I haven't read so far and I look forward to what lies ahead in the book. For I didn't reach far into the book yet but its interesting. To sum up sadly there isn't anything I can connect this book to whats happening today. Overall, I enjoyed reading my SSR book today because it gave me a break from being on my phone all day.
ReplyDeleteI just started reading Becoming, by Michelle Obama. I started to read this book because my family was talking about it so I wanted to know what they were talking about. I have also heard a lot of good things about it. So far it’s actually pretty good. I haven't gotten really deep into the book yet, so far the book doesn’t relate to what is going on in today's world. I am looking forward to reading this book and talking to my family about it.

DeleteThis seems like a very fascinating book, Michelle Obama is definitely a figure that I look up to. I love the way she is very empowering and loves a good healthy way of life, we share that in common for sure.
DeleteI started re-reading the book that I read couple years ago and never really finished it. It is called "Fangirl" by Rainbow Rowell. As I re-read the book I started becoming familiar again with the characters and the plot of the story. There were parts that I already forgot and remembered them as I re-read it. There were also parts that I didn't notice that were there. I'm loving this book even more compared to the first time that I read it.
ReplyDeleteThe book I am currently reading is called The Pie Life by Samantha Ettus. Lately, I have become very interested in life motivating and directing books like this one. In the book Ettus depicts the categorizing of our lives from hobbies to health. She notes events from her own life as a working mother and really orientates towards a female audience. However, her work doesn't necessarily limit to just women seeing as her advice can really help everyone. I feel as though that because I am entering a new chapter in my life that is very hectic and complicated reading these types of books give me ease for the future. I just started The Pie Life, but I already like the divisions of topics the author is discussing and want to further my lessons with her.
ReplyDeleteI am currently reading The Help by Kathryn Stockett because I am a fan of how the author doesn't have the story in just 1 perspective. It's in all the main character's heads and shows what goes on inside their heads in the segregated south. Also, it reflects life in the south a decade or so after the 13th amendment. I enjoy sitting down to read this book because it's comical and heartwarming as well as not underexaggerating of the south between the whites and the blacks. A further looking into the book, oppression is something that hasn't left over the years, it'd just been out of the light than it was back then.

ReplyDeleteThe book I’m reading is called “Sacrificing Families” by Leisy J. Abrego. I chose this book because it focuses on the topic of transnational families, specifically Salvadoran transnational families. I found this book to be very interesting and relative to today because we continue to see people migrating to the U.S. Many factors such as violence, corruption, and work have caused people to make the sacrifice of coming to the U.S. in order to give their family or children a better life back in El Salvador/Central America. When the migrant caravan was making its way to the U.S. we witnessed first hand the terrible conditions many migrants had to endure trying to make it to the Mexico-U.S. border. From there many people had to wait for many days and weeks to even be allowed into the U.S. with no promises of even knowing if they would be granted asylum or access. The people who migrated here all came on foot and walked many miles with minimal food and water for themselves and their children. These types of sacrifices come with a cost of being seperated at the border from your family or in most cases parents migrate seeking a better chance at life in the U.S. while their kids stay behind and don’t know when they will see their parents again. That’s if they ever get to see their parents again. The stories told throughout this book have allowed me to really think about the many sacrifices that many transnational families make in order to give their children and families a better life.
ReplyDeleteI read a short story by Charlie Mackesy, called "The Boy, the Mole, the Fox, and the Horse." I chose this book because it is book with universal lessons based on characters going on a journey. I believe that the book is meant to bring peace and hope to the reader since it has a quote on each page, that tie to each other page. This book could connect with what is happening in our world today because people have gotten depressed and confused with the situation. I know that this book is full of encouraging and helpful phrases that could help anyone that flips to any page, or by starting from the beginning. That is the whole idea of the book, each page holds a different meaning yet it creates a bigger picture once read together.
ReplyDeleteFor the past few weeks I have been reading "The Wicked Will Rise" by Danielle Paige. I chose to read this book because it is a part of a series that I have started before. This book is a sequel to Paige's Dorothy Must Die. Compared to the first book, this one started off a little slow. However, as I kept reading, the story line began to come along and all of my questions from the first book were answered. Despite this, new questions came to mind and I became more and more glued to my book. One connection I see between "The Wicked Will Rise" and in our world today is how both are facing life threatening problems that are affecting the whole world. In this version of Oz, good is bad and bad is good. With Dorothy Gale in charge, the whole land of Oz is falling apart due to her hunger for magical power. She continues to take the land's magic for her own selfish desires and it is up to a rebellious group of witches to stop her, including the other girl from Kansas, Amy Gumm. In our world, we are facing a pandemic that is taking thousands of lives and it is up to our governments, doctors, nurses, and more to deal with the issue at hand. For both, the problem may seem impossible to handle, but with every problem, there is a solution .
ReplyDeleteThe book I am currently reading is called "David and Goliath" by Malcolm Gladwell. I started to read this book because of my interest in this author, Malcolm Gladwell. It was recommended to me after I shared an interest in economics and in the way the mind works. I truly enjoy this book because it exposes me to different ways of thinking, and the way I perceive things. It has research, statistics, and studies, but it all is simplified for the reader. So far the book has talked about the disadvantages of what seemingly might be an advantage. In other words what might give you so much might actually be what hurts you. In a sense like a double edged sword. It also about how disadvantages might be the very thing that gives you an advantage, or that it may be the thing that helps lead you to success. In all honesty I can't really figure out a connection between the book and what is happening today. It is however, exciting me for the future and what may or may not happen.
ReplyDeleteThe book I have chosen to read is called the "Flowers in the Attic" by V.C. Andrews. It takes place in the fifties, and seems to be a fictional horror book. I have chosen this book because it was one of my mother's favorite books that she read when she was around my age. I also have seen the movie a long time ago, and while I do not remember most things, I remember enough that I would like to now see it in word form, which is always better. I definitely see strong connections to what is happening to us right now in the quarantine. In the book, these children are unable to leave the attic, just like how we are unable to leave our houses. The only thing is, while our reason for not leaving is a virus, their reason is their insane family. I am excited to continue reading.
