[KC]: The Rise of Livestreams

Hi kids!

In this time of quarantine, I've been thinking a lot about the role of ART in our daily lives. Obviously, being an English teacher I'm talking about literature, but I'm also talking about music and film and painting and dance and comics, etc. There are so many forms of art out there, and if you're anything like me, those are some of the things we're turning to for peace and comfort in these uncertain times. One thing that has caught my attention in the past few weeks has been the sheer number of livestreams going on. It seems like each time I open my Instagram app, the little red circles catch my eye: I see four or five lives going at a time. For artists, this has always been a way to connect with fans, to give announcements and updates, and to market themselves in a more personal way. Yet, the livestreams I've seen lately have been different. It seems there's a different perspective, a different soul with them. What do you all think? Are we seeing more livestreams because it's a way for artists to stay relevant during a time where they can't sell out concerts or set up art showcases or go on book tours or have their films be seen in theaters across the world? Or are we seeing more livestreams because ART is something we need to survive, in the way we need air and water and human connection? Are we seeing artists show their talents for free because that connection is just as necessary for them as it is for us? What do you think?

I just got done watching a two-hour livestream of one of my favorite artists (Kina Grannis) singing songs from the floor of her living room and it filled me with so much hope in these weird times. What livestreams and other pieces of art have brought you hope during this time? Comment to let us know. Let's fill this thread with thoughts on art and recommendations :]

Stay hopeful, kids!

  1. I feel like livestreaming is not only a way to stay connected with the fans. But it also allows us to represent ourselves in our own cereative artistic way, through a live video of whatever we choose.
As I see it, artists often do not need to livestream, they already have enough fans and do not need to gain more. The artists' focus through livestream is not only to find ways to be more creative through ART. But can also be a great way to connect with other humans that inspire us or that we inspire
I believe we are seeing more Livestreams because it gives us our own voice through ART. Livestreams is one way to express ourselves, and is often the only thing we can do right now. With everything else from the beaches to the parks being taken away from us. Due to these things now being absent, we feel bare and have no other option but to reflect on the reals around us,by appreciating and being thankful for the people around them that love and support you for who you are, not who anybody else wants you to be or thinks you should be. Self expression is always key thorugh happiness, whether this be through ART, excercise, literature, driving a bus, anything that makes you feel satisfied and happy. So long as you are not harming others or yourself hopefully!
Odly enough it has come to these unprecedented times of a virus to be "everywhere" for people to start realizing all that is around them, for example people are more clean now because of this coronavirus.

    1. Bri,
I agree with you and love how you expressed it as people "feeling bare." It's interesting that in a time where we feel out of control and uncertain, we also feel exposed and without essential things. I think art gives that back to us. It gives us some sort of cloak, something that blankets us in warmth and allowed us to feel similar to others in a time where we feel so alone.

  2. In my opinion, I think art is definitely something we need to survive. I think we are seeing more livestreams now, only because of everything going on right now in the world to also just share the creativity some people need in their everyday life people might not be getting right now. Don’t get me wrong the livestreaming may also be a way for artists to stay in touch with their fans and be able to show what they have been doing and creating so people stay intrigued with them. I am actually very happy and pleased that there is an option for people to share their creative ideas and passions. At least for me. I believe that art is a way of therapy and also for many people I know and are around. For most of the people I have talked to during this quarantine, I have been doing more and more art. Obviously in time, we are venturing out more and being more artistic because we are limited in what things are able to do outdoors because of the quarantining. I think that even if people think they are not artistic, I believe that everyone is artistic in some way or another. Just some people are better at it just like anything else. I don’t think that i would be able to live life without some type of art. Whether that is singing, coloring, painting, drawing, writing, and even cooking. It's something that is so involved in my life I couldn't imagine life without it! Anyways, I miss school actually very much and I miss the everyday things, I very much took for granted. I hope we are able to go back soon! I also hope all of you are staying healthy and not too bored!
